Communications & Marketing Specialist

We are seeking a Communications & Marketing Specialist to support the planning and execution of the 2026 Breakthroughs Film Festival.
We will only accept Greater Toronto Area-based applicants.
Terms of Contract
Commitment: Hours vary due to festival needs. Contractor will work a total maximum of 160 hours for the duration of the contract. Hours will be approximately:
5 hours/week (onboarding, prep and post-festival)
15 hours/week (lead up to the festival, October-November)
Length: August 25th to December 18th, 2026
Rate: $26/h
Payment Schedule: Monthly. Invoice due on the 1st of each month.
Schedule: Hybrid work; largely remote but in-person attendance in Toronto required for events
Reports to: Executive Director
Key Responsibilities:
Planning and communication:
Spearhead the development of a communication strategy for the festival with the support of Executive Director and Executive Committee.
Develop and maintain a comprehensive social media and newsletter content calendar for Instagram, Facebook, Linkedin and Letterboxd, aligning with BFF’s overall marketing strategy.
Aid in developing an outreach strategy, including build and maintain partnership documentation and lists (co-presenters, community partners, BFF alum).
Create and maintain a schedule for partnership and co-presentation activities, including promotion on social media and newsletter.
Manage distribution of materials and be present (where applicable) at community events.
Support relationships with community partners.
Support marketing for festival merchandise.
Pitch the festival to media outlets.
Respond to direct messages on social media.
Attend events and capture content for social media, as needed.
Graphic Design:
Create visually appealing and on-brand templates and other social media assets for social media posts on Canva.
Manage the distribution of print and electronic promotional materials.
Copywriting:
Develop engaging and informative copy for social media posts/captions and newsletter content.
Respond to comments and direct messages on social media accounts and keep track of open conversations in a way that can be relayed to the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
Assist with website copywriting, proofing, and updating as needed.
Brand Visual Consistency:
Ensure consistent brand application across the website, social media platforms, and newsletter. Provide recommendations for visual enhancements to strengthen brand identity.
Reporting:
Generate reports with social media and newsletter analytics, as needed.
Requirements:
Proficiency with social media management
Experience with graphic design and simple video editing considered a strong asset
Experience with Canva and Mailchimp is an asset
Proven experience with time management
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Commitment to and history of working in women and non-binary spaces and working with intersectional feminist and anti-oppressive values
Passion for film and a commitment to promoting diverse voices in the industry
In-person attendance at the 2026 Breakthroughs Film Festival (December 4-6, 2026)
Preference for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and/or Person of Colour) youth candidates
