In an effort to continue growing the festival, this year we have expanded the festival to include submissions from emerging female directors of any age. We will still maintain and highlight the works of New Generation young directors (30 and under) but have opened up submissions to emerging directors who are over the age of 30 as well. The mandate of Breakthroughs has always been to support the work of up and coming female filmmakers and now we are able to broaden our scope for more inclusion.

For the purposes of our festival (as we only programme short films), we define "emerging" as any female director who has not made a feature-length film as of June 2017.

There are now two options for your submission, which is simply based on which age bracket you fall into. Short films can be any genre and form (narrative, documentary, animated, experimental), but must be 20 minutes or less in length, including credits. All submissions will be viewed and considered on equal merit under these guidelines.

The film must have been completed after January 1, 2015 to be considered. Films in a language other than English must have English subtitles.

With respect to submission format, we ONLY accept online screeners and digital entries. Submissions of DVD's or any other physical format will not be accepted.

Thanks for submitting and we look forward to watching your films!
