Breakthroughs Film Festival is the only festival in Canada devoted exclusively to short films by New Generation female artists. We show films from any and every genre made by talented young women from all over the world.

The word ‘Breakthroughs’ refers to the struggles women artists face in an industry where they make up a very small percentage of directors and must, in many cases, work even harder than their male counterparts to make their voices heard. Breakthroughs Film Festival seeks to revolutionize these stigmas by creating a space to honour new generation female filmmakers and their fledgling accomplishments. We are committed to showcasing and promoting women in film between the ages of 18-30 during our summer film festival and in many other presentations throughout the year.

As a not-for-profit organization, Breakthroughs Film Festival and it’s partner company Octavia films have been providing completion funding for female-driven short films since 2013.  We seek to aid young women at that all-too-critical time during post-production when funds often run low and time is of the essence.  Grants range from $300-$1000 for women between the ages of 18-30 years of age who demonstrate sound knowledge of the craft and show strong potential for future artistic achievement.
